by admin on Apr.20, 2010, under 1, Music

4 months later and I get to finish this list, now if I can actually keep up with the website for an extended period of time!

3. The band who has you crank the radio to 11 whenever a song of theirs comes on the radio. One of the most recognizable rock and roll bands in history…….and they’re BACK IN BLACK!!

2. Bruce Dickinson leads a gang of Brazilians into an epic frenzy as he leads the charge well on into the night, despite a FEAR OF THE DARK. Over 250,000 were in attendance in 2001 at Rock in Rio to witness this incredible display of talent

1. Despite Fear of the Dark being my personal favorite live performance of all time, there is one that will forever stand the test of time. Picture it….1969. The 60’s are nearing the end, and it takes one man and his insane guitar skills to bring an era to a close. This is the perfect ending to one of the most influential times in pop culture history. Number 1 on the first list on Ulterior Magazine that I have actually completed, I give you…

Jimi Hendrix- Star Spangled Banner (Woodstock 1969)

Ten Totally Tremendous Live Performances: Drama for Sale

by admin on Dec.17, 2009, under Humor, Life, Music

Live is a band that was well liked, yet never seemed to get that final push toward the pinnacle of the music industry. They may have fallen short technically, but fans of the band knew what the hype was all about.

With numerous hits still circulating radio waves to this day, Live has been given a niche label so to speak, most notably being associated with the 90’s alternative scene.

If there is one band that personifies alternative rock to its core, it is this band.

At Rockin Park 2000, still riding the tail end of their wave through the shores of music, Live showed they had plenty in the tank. Catchy, simple guitar riffs with an addicting melody give this song plenty of flavor.

Live is criminally underrated.

Ten Totally Tremendous Live Performances: Children of the Korn

by admin on Dec.16, 2009, under Humor, Life, Music

Once upon a time, there was a Kids Night Out at SUNYIT. Once upon a time, at this said Kids Night Out, us surburban white kids needed our rush of angst. Endlessly requesting smash hits like Blue Monday by Orgy and Bawitdaba by Kid Rock to blare over the loudspeakers, there was one band that was supposed to be “different”.

Do you like Korn with your mashed potatoes?

Korn was the band of misfits that everyone related to because at some point they felt that way too. Korn peaked during the times of the nu metal era, but there crowning night was Woodstock 99.

Playing to nearly a quarter million people at the Griffis Air Force Base in Rome, NY, Korn’s entrance and the crowd thrashing that followed was nothing short of chaotic. People did, and can still, get seriously injured when a sea of people decides to go berzerk. Korn not only embraced the homely welcome, they encouraged the audience through their body language and aggressive music playing (ok, so calling it music is really stretchin it, but hey it was cool back then).

Ten Totally Tremendous Live Performances: White Surburbia Goes Gangster

by admin on Dec.10, 2009, under Humor, Life, Music

Back in the day when you wore hip hop clothing you got made fun of relentlessly and sometimes referred to as a “wigger”.  Nowadays everyone can wear a straight fitted and drive down the street blaring hip hop and no one gives a second notice.

Fashion like most things however is cyclical. Gone are the ridiculously large jeans with 18 pockets, and in their place are better fitting jeans made by an even more expensive designer. Hip hop fashion is expensive!

One thing thats not too expensive however is a CD. And the CD “2001″ by Dr Dre was a smash hit with all of us kids in middle school. Who didn’t memorize Forget About Dre within 3 days??

In support of the album, Dre, along with Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Eminem, and Nate Dogg traveled the country as the Up in Smoke Tour. A DVD was released of a show on the tour, and fans were not disappointed.

Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg come out rollin in a very gangster vehicle complete with hydraulics. After performing Let Me Ride, the dynamic duo comes out with Still Dre, the first single from the new album.

Watch as thousands of white kids throw their arms in the air like they don’t care getting down with their bad self’s. Dre and Snoop light up the arena like a lightning storm and the crowd gets electrified.

And I still got love for the streets, its the J.A.Y

Ten Totally Tremendous Live Performances: Carl Cox is Epic

by admin on Dec.07, 2009, under Humor, Life, Music

Carl Cox is a name synonomous with the underground dance, i.e rave scene, since the times of true all night parties. The rave scene had numerous icons, but Cox is a name that stands at the crest of excellence.

Using catchy beats and smooth transitions with just enough techno flavor give Cox a sound that ravers had chewed their gums through listening to on numerous occasions.

At Dance Valley 2004 however, Carl Cox went into another dimension. Although only a 2 minute video exists to this magazine’s knowledges, its enough to warrant a spot on the list.

The light show that accompanys this performance is mesmerizing and breath taking. You can feel the vibes send chills down your neck.

Its a DECADE OF DANCE!!!

Ten Totally Tremendous Live Performances: Chillin on the Porch

by admin on Dec.06, 2009, under Humor, Life, Music

They’re first album was diamond certified. Their name was derived from a band member’s grandmother’s name. They were at one point icons.

Pearl Jam.

One member of the Four Horsemen of the Grunge Movement so to speak went on to achieve superstardom. They have outlasted many Seattle area bands and are still recognized today.

The Pink Pop Music Festival is an annual rock festival held at Landgraaf, Netherlands. In 1992, Pearl Jam brought their energetic live performance overseas for a set the crowd would never forget.

Playing hits like Alive, Black, and a sweet cover of Neil Young’s “Keep on Rockin in the Free World”. It was the finale however, that really brought the spectacle and the aura of the festival together.

The video personifies what it was like to be Pearl Jam at the height of their career. Just another amazing crowd display and stellar performance.

Ten Totally Tremendous Live Performances: Les Claypool Tweaks Out

by admin on Dec.01, 2009, under Humor, Life, Music

Les Claypool is a very interesting man. Starting with his voice and continuing with his incessant amount of quirky outfits makes Claypool the King of Weird.

Claypool, the bassist for the band Primus, is no stranger to having such a label. His unorthodox style permeates into his bass playing abilities as well, making fantastic riffs that resonate the ears.

He along with Larry LaLonde (guitar) and Tim “Herb” Alexander (drums) make up the trio known for putting out albums like Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda.

They unleashed their distinctive style on the muddy crowd in Saugerties, NY for Woodstock 94. One song in particular brought the crowd into a gigantic frenzy, resulting in a memorable sea of brown and humanity.

Primus Sucks chants infiltrate the concert area as the band took the stage. The moniker is ironic in of itself because its chanted by fans of the group which makes for a good inside joke.

Les Claypool comes out wearing a ridiculously awesome American flag shirt, which was a sure fire way for him to get laid. The Herb is bashing drums like Fedor’s fists on faces and is doing so in overalls. No words can describe just how those overalls bring the whole point of Primus together.

Check out other videos of Primus on YouTube, their hilarity and divergence from commonness can be witnessed everywhere.

These damn blue collared tweekers, they have always run this town!!

Ten Totally Tremendous Live Performances: Russia meets Metal

by admin on Nov.29, 2009, under Humor, Life, Music

1991 was the year. Over half a million people attended the Monsters of Rock show in Moscow on a cloudy September morning. A record breaking attendance got to see a lineup that included AC/DC, Pantera, and Metallica.

James Hetfield and company blitzkrieged the stage with viking intensity. They ruled over the masses, who screamed in approval.

One song in particular stands out. The riffs came in lightning fast and the drums crush your eardrums.

OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH…..I’M CREEPING DEATH!!

YouTube Preview Image

Metalheads rejoice at the past fury that Metallica unleashed on the world. The sheer number of people is what brings the aura of the concert to a full circle. Legends of metal bringing the insane riffs and energetic performances.

Metallica is in its own league. \m/

Metal up your ass.

The Imminent Death of Modern Rock

by admin on Oct.07, 2009, under 1, Music

Kurt Cobain shook up the world in 1991 as part of Nirvana with their major release Nevermind. The album went on to do more then sell millions of records; it changed the face of rock and roll.

What initially started as the backlash of the hair metal and nu wave movement continued on well into the 90’s and into the 2000’s. Today, its result is merely a shell of its predecessors.

Take a look at the 4 “classic albums” of alternative rock/grunge that helped launch the latest wave of modern rock. Nirvana’s Nevermind, Pearl Jam’s Ten, Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger, and Alice in Chains Dirt. These 4 albums are all drastically different from each other.

It’s 2009, and rock and roll is at an all time low.

In this video Henry Rollins hits the nail on the head. What happened to the balls in rock and roll? Since when did everything become so homogenized and stripped of any real meaning?

Every great music explosion has eventually become homogenized because thats just how big business operates. They take an idea, run it into the ground for all its worth, and leave it to die before moving on to the next big thing.

What happened to rock and roll? What happened to the genre of music that genuinely pissed people off and was featured on the evening news as being revolutionary and dangerous? What happened to the bands that would proclaim ”we’re not happy and here’s why”?

Radio can be tolerated for short periods of time, and a big emphasis on short. You can count on one hand the number of new modern rock songs on the radio that have a guitar solo in them. It’s pathetic to see instruments as background noise to overrated singers who got big due to huge advertising campaigns and media hype.

What happened to the originality? Did we hit the biggest bump in the road, and the car’s suspension can’t take it anymore? If you want to say that there is distinguishable characteristics about particular modern rock bands, I give you the next four examples:

YouTube Preview Image YouTube Preview Image YouTube Preview Image YouTube Preview Image

The songs are Whiskey Hangover by Godsmack, Breakdown by Seether, Overcome by Creed, and Dear Agony by Breaking Benjamin.

After listening to these songs, you will notice that the vocals can be somewhat distinguished, only to a small extent. After that its all downfall.

Please ignore the vocals when you listen to these songs. Pay close attention to the background music, it sounds like a bunch of static 95% of the time. If you actually think that one little guitar riff on Overcome qualifies as a solo, Jimi Hendrix says you’re an asshole.

Big corporations are making millions by copying the same formula and plugging in a different singer and give the band some false sense of identity. The amount of artists in the world that have talent and got nothing to show for it is astounding.

The genre is boring and repetitive, and its starting to show its true colors. Instead of having a few bands that sounded the same, now just about all are following the same old “insert name here” manufacturing process that is modern music.

Modern rock only has little time to live. Pretty soon an unraveling is going to occur from the next generation who are going to look upon the selfish state of modern music and give it the middle finger.

Modern rock, like any other music trend, will be a thing of the past. Emo left, and in it’s place is the rise of the hipster. Rap has been largely overshadowed by crooning R n B artists.

What will be modern rock’s kryptonite?

Week 4 of the NFL Season with Dr. Jay

by admin on Oct.04, 2009, under 1, Humor, Sports

Father Hacksaw loved Yugoslavia so much during his seminar he decided to stay another week. Here’s Dr. Jay to give you the rundown on this week’s match-ups.

The top story in the league that made headlines around the world involved a team that just couldn’t find their stride. Lost in a sea of talent, a team that was ridiculed and persecuted by the league but has now grown to be America’s favorite underdog.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Detroit Lions won a game last week. Boo yah.

Matthew Stafford and the Lions will bring their one game winning streak to Soldier Field today to take on the Bears. Despite the Bear’s inefficient running game, Jay Cutler is slowly finding his stride in Chicago and their defense needs no introduction. This will be a tough test for the Lions to go on a two game winning streak, and the possibilities are looking slim. Final score: Chicago 54 Detroit 3

The Oakland Raiders and the Houston Texans will square off in the least talked about game in the league. JaMarcus Russell is one of the worst first overall draft picks in history (drafted Number 1 in 2007) and Darren McFadden is going to have to bust out something special as Run DMC. The Texans come in with a healthy offense featuring Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter, and Owen Daniels so this should be an easy one. The Result: Houston 127, Oakland 11

Drew Brees and his fellow ragin Cajuns from N’Orleans host the overachieving New York Jets. Mark Sanchez is the most beloved man in New York, he and Rex Ryan have plenty of reasons to say why they are. After Sanchez jazzes his 27th groupie before taking the field at 4, he must realize he will be up against one of football’s fastest rising teams.

The team whose fans would wear paper bags over their heads and call themselves the Aints, New Orleans has bounced back as a positive figure in a community that is still rattled by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The Jets defense has been fantastic this year, but Brees along with Marcus Colston, Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush, Devery Henderson, and Jeremy Shockey are saying just bring it. When the obese lady sings, the score will read New Orleans 35 New York 20

On a personal note, the Steelers better wipe the floor with the San Diego Chargers tonight. Phillip Rivers is one of the most obnoxious quarterbacks in recent memory, and if this game reaches triple digits you can expect to see Rivers cry. Wipe away the tears Phil, it’ll only hurt for 60 minutes.

The bye weeks start today as well, and that leaves many fantasy owners holding their breath that their backup delivers the goods like UPS. If Shaun Hill is on waivers in your league, give him a look because he’s going up against the St. Louis Rams and he doesn’t turn the ball over much. He’s a very solid backup fantasy quarterback.
